Adding Mixed Fractions Made Easy!

Have you ever looked at a mixed fraction and wondered how on earth you were supposed to add it? Well, wonder no more! This blog post will show you how to add mixed fractions with ease. And the best part is, at the end of this post, you can download a free worksheet to practice your new skill. So, let's get started!

How to Add Mixed Fractions

When adding mixed fractions, there are two things you need to do: convert improper fractions to mixed fractions, and then add the mixed fractions together. Let's walk through an example so you can see how it's done.

Let's say we want to add the following mixed fractions: 1 1/4 + 2/3.

The first step is to convert each improper fraction into a mixed fraction.

For our first fraction, 1 1/4, we take the whole number (1) and multiply it by the denominator (4), which gives us 4. Then, we add the numerator (1) to that, which gives us 5. So 1 1/4 becomes 5/4.

For our second fraction, 2/3, we take the whole number (2) and multiply it by the denominator (3), which gives us 6. Then, we add the numerator (2) to that, which gives us 8. So 2/3 becomes 8/3.

Now that we have both of our fractions in proper form, we can add them together just like any other fractions: 5/4 + 8/3. To do this, we find the least common denominator of 4 and 3, which is 12. Once we have that, we convert each fraction so that it has a denominator of 12: 10/12 + 24/12.

Now we can simply add the numerators together (10 + 24) to get 34. The final answer is 34/12 or 2 7/12. And there you have it! You've just added two mixed fractions like a pro!
